Composite Gates

Composite gates have become really popular, and it's easy to see why. You get the warm, solid look of a timber gate, but no rotting, no splitting and no staining every summer. For our weather, that's a large win.

Composite gates are priced on survey, depending on size and design.

What is a composite gate?

Composite boards are normally made from a mix of wood fibre and plastic. On a good gate, they're fitted into a strong frame – normally steel or aluminium – so the gate stays straight and doesn't sag. Cheap composite gates without a proper frame are the ones that bow and droop.

Composite Driveway Gates Around Carlisle

Composite gates give you the warm look of timber without the rot, the warping or the yearly treatment. The boards are made from a wood-and-plastic mix and set into a rigid metal frame, so the gate keeps its shape through wet Cumbrian winters.

They suit modern houses and new-build estates especially well, and solid boarding gives you full privacy from the road. Colours range from natural wood tones to greys and anthracite.

Composite gates are priced on survey, because board choice, frame and size vary so much. We'll measure up and give you a clear written figure.

Electric Composite Gates With Low Upkeep

Because composite is heavier than it looks, the automation has to be chosen with care. We match CAME motors to the weight of each leaf and the wind load on solid boarding, which matters on exposed sites near the Solway or up in the fells.

Every automated composite gate gets the right safety devices – photocells, safety edges where needed – and a force test to BS EN 12453 before we hand it over.

Upkeep is minimal: a wash down now and again and an annual service of the motors. Your installation also comes with our 3-year parts and labour warranty.

Why choose composite?

  • Low maintenance – a wash now and again is all it needs
  • No rot, no splitting – stays looking good in the wet
  • Full privacy – solid boards block the view into your driveway
  • Modern look – popular in greys, anthracite, oak and walnut shades
  • Quiet – solid boards cut a little of road noise

Things to know

  • Weight and wind. Solid composite gates are heavy and catch the wind like a sail. The motors and posts must be sized for that, especially on exposed sites. I take it into account on every quote.
  • Colour. Like most materials, composite can fade slightly over time in strong sun. Better boards fade less.
  • Design. Horizontal boards are the most popular, but vertical, slatted and mixed designs are possible.

Making them electric

  • Overground motors – the most common choice for swing gates
  • Underground motors – hidden from view
  • Sliding gate automation – for sliding composite gates

A composite sliding gate is a smart choice on a short driveway – full privacy without needing room to swing.

Questions people ask me

How much do composite electric gates cost?

I price them after a free site survey. A complete electric swing gate installation typically starts from £2,500.

Do composite gates warp?

Good ones, with a steel or aluminium frame, don't. Cheap unframed gates can bow.

Are composite gates good in the wind?

They're solid, so they catch the wind. With the right motor, hinges and posts they're fine.
