Happy with your gates as they are? You may not need to replace them. Most of the time we can add automation to your existing gates so they open at the touch of a button – usually for much less than the cost of new electric gates.

What can be automated?
Almost any gate that's in good order:
- wrought iron and steel gates
- timber gates, including five-bar and field gates
- composite and aluminium gates
- sliding gates
- everything from small single gates to large, heavy commercial gates
The gate must be solid, move freely and hang on strong hinges and posts. If anything needs attention first, we'll let you know. See can my existing gates be automated?
Turning Manual Gates into Automatic Gates
Converting manual gates starts with a careful look at the gates themselves. We check the hinges, posts and frames, see how freely the gates move and measure how much they weigh, because the motor has to be matched to all of that.
If a hinge needs replacing or a post needs strengthening, we'll do that first. Then we fit the motors, control board and safety devices, and set the system up so the gates open smoothly and safely.
Gate Automation for Carlisle Farms and Homes
Around Carlisle we automate everything from wrought iron gates on town houses to five-bar gates on farm lanes. For gates a long way from the house, GSM control lets you open them by calling a number from your phone.
Where there's no power nearby, we'll look at the cable route and the options before recommending anything. The goal is always a reliable automatic gate that suits how you actually use it.

The kit I use
We fit CAME automation for domestic and commercial gates, with heavy-duty motors for large or busy gates. CAME equipment is dependable and spare parts are easy to come by.
Converting a gate safely
Something most people aren't aware of: fitting a motor to a manual gate turns it into a machine, and the person who does it is responsible for making it safe and compliant. A converted gate has to meet the same rules as a brand-new automatic gate.
That's why every conversion we carry out gets the right safety devices, a force test to BS EN 12453 and a Declaration of Conformity – and why we don't recommend DIY gate kits.
Upgrades and smart control
- Smart and app control – open the gate from your phone, or connect it to Alexa or Google Home.
- Upgrading an old system – replace worn motors or control boards, or add safety devices to older gates.

Questions people ask me
Can any gate be made electric?
Most can, provided they're solid and hang on strong hinges and posts. Gates that sag badly or are rotten may need repairing or replacing first.
Is it cheaper to automate my gates than buy new electric gates?
Usually, yes. A complete new swing gate installation typically starts from £2,500, and automating sound gates you already have generally costs less.
Can wooden gates be automated?
Yes, as long as they're well built and don't twist. See automating wooden and five-bar gates.
How long does a conversion take?
Often a day or two, depending on the groundwork and cabling.
